This holiday season some families are struggling to buy those special gifts. That is why Toys R Us is extending its layaway program. Since the company first introduced the program in 2009 hundreds to thousands have taken full advantage of it. People love that they can pay in increments and not in one chunk.

The layaway program was originally only for large items. Not anymore. Starting October 15, you can put just about any item on layaway including Barbie dolls to toy cars and Lego sets.

As with all, rules apply such as you must put down 20% and pay a $5.00 service fee. You then have 90 days to pay off that purchase. It must be paid off by December 4th. If you are an online shopper you can select the Bill me later option eventually paying it off over time. If you want the item delivered by Christmas you must have it paid off by December 1st. If you cancel your order then you must pay a $10.00 cancellation fee.

During this economic turmoil that people are waking up to everyday, this might help to lift the burden off of some people by helping them cut their costs. As the economy keeps going into its downward spiral people are more open to the idea of using layaway. It does not matter what your household income is. Statistics show that people with incomes $40,000 year, above or below, still use layaway.

Last month, Wal-Mart announced that they were also going to be doing their layaway program from October 17 - December 17. This also carried a $5.00 service fee. Kmart and Sears also do their layaway program throughout the whole year.

My Secret Garden

Every year when spring comes around I feel a great need to plant flowers, herbs, and vegetables. It becomes my time to plant my secret garden.

Sometimes I feel as though I go overboard with all the planting. Yet in the end it is such a beautiful reward when I sit back and look at all that I have created with my own hands and the beauty that lives within each plant.

The feeling of the dirt between each finger when I am planting the seeds brings a connection to me that is so strong that I feel a rush of relaxation. It is kind of like a rain storm. Some people feel more relaxed and find it easier to fall asleep.

As soon as I step out onto my porch I step into the sanctuary that I have created. I feel so rejuvenated and in a meditative state of mind. I am one with the earth and its living plants. It is a deep bond created within the roots of creation.

The earth is our playground. It is our gift. We need to take care of it as though it is one of our children. I live in a very rural area. Surrounding me are lots of trees and plants. When I step out into the woods, I feel a natural high. I do not know where this comes from. Maybe it can be spiritual.

In the winter time, I like to bring plants into my home. I feel the need for lots of greenery to brighten my day as I look out of the window only to see bare trees with no leaves.  The only trees resembling any signs of life here in the winter are evergreens which is a special tree to use at Christmas time.

The cold air feels like desperation that is never ending. When spring peaks its head around the corner and tells me, “I’m coming!” I start the endless cycle of planting more life to help my mind become more at peace.

So with having said this, in my opinion, I think that this is some form of therapy. It helps people relax and escape from their everyday chaos. It is an uplifting rush of visualization of that small seed growing into a beautiful mature plant that will bring happiness to a dark room.  It is my safe haven, it is my church, and it is my secret garden.
