Every year when spring comes around I feel a great need to plant flowers, herbs, and vegetables. It becomes my time to plant my secret garden.
Sometimes I feel as though I go overboard with all the planting. Yet in the end it is such a beautiful reward when I sit back and look at all that I have created with my own hands and the beauty that lives within each plant.
The feeling of the dirt between each finger when I am planting the seeds brings a connection to me that is so strong that I feel a rush of relaxation. It is kind of like a rain storm. Some people feel more relaxed and find it easier to fall asleep.
As soon as I step out onto my porch I step into the sanctuary that I have created. I feel so rejuvenated and in a meditative state of mind. I am one with the earth and its living plants. It is a deep bond created within the roots of creation.
The earth is our playground. It is our gift. We need to take care of it as though it is one of our children. I live in a very rural area. Surrounding me are lots of trees and plants. When I step out into the woods, I feel a natural high. I do not know where this comes from. Maybe it can be spiritual.
In the winter time, I like to bring plants into my home. I feel the need for lots of greenery to brighten my day as I look out of the window only to see bare trees with no leaves. The only trees resembling any signs of life here in the winter are evergreens which is a special tree to use at Christmas time.
The cold air feels like desperation that is never ending. When spring peaks its head around the corner and tells me, “I’m coming!” I start the endless cycle of planting more life to help my mind become more at peace.
So with having said this, in my opinion, I think that this is some form of therapy. It helps people relax and escape from their everyday chaos. It is an uplifting rush of visualization of that small seed growing into a beautiful mature plant that will bring happiness to a dark room. It is my safe haven, it is my church, and it is my secret garden.
